London 2012 Olympics Ceremonies

LED Umbrellas

For the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremonies, TAIT created 700 LED umbrellas, designed to run on domestic batteries, for use in a choreographed performance.

The canopy of each umbrella was made with flame retardant, waterproof spinnaker fabric that housed a dome containing 60 RGB LEDS with seven pre-programmed colours. The result was a dramatic display of light and colour.

After the show, cast members who wanted to keep an umbrella made donations to the international children’s charity UNICEF. Batches of the umbrellas were also sent to schools and amatueur theatre productions.
