Theatre de Maagd x TAIT

Since installing a TAIT Automated Flying™ System and epiQ consoles at Theatre De Maagd in 2019 the theatre team is leveraging this technology investment to unleash the imaginations of a new generation of theatre makers and technical practitioners. Realising that their investment in the iQ consoles, which are powered by the TAIT Navigator Automation Platform also meant that they had acquired a powerful Show Control system, the theatre is exploring the multitude of ways in which this can make shows better:
- Better control of costs because Navigator’s tight integration with the unreal engine enables cost saving through problem-solving in pre-visualization, freeing up valuable stage-time by starting shows’ technical processes in the virtual world.
- Better crossing of the uncanny valley be tightly integrating performer position tracking on moving scenery with technologies such as spacial audio.
- Better safety by ensuring that performers and technicians backstage have visibility of silent flying operations.
Theatrte de Maagd provides a unique training venue in a producing venue with diverse public productions which gives technicians immediate hands-on experience with a wide range of integrated technologies at which they can experiment with and learn about the benefits of joining automation/show-control with other technical disciplines of audio, video and lighting.
Cees Snellink, at Theatre de Maagd, said: “The future of theater technology is holistic — everything communicates with everything. Systems such as audio, lighting, tracking, and motion must be able to communicate with each other, because the future of theater technology is holistic and software-oriented. The TAIT setup with the Navigator system aligns with this vision without compromising on safety. Moreover, this setup offers the flexibility to evolve with future developments.
For example, it enables integration between the virtual and physical worlds during preproduction. With other systems, this is nearly impossible due to their closed architecture. The ability to use and fine-tune the Navigator for custom applications tailored to your specific theater setup is unparalleled. That’s why choosing this system was a no-brainer for us. In addition, we are training the theater technicians of the future right here in Bergen op Zoom. The focus lies on a holistic approach within an immersive world.”
Eric Gautron, TAIT - "TAIT is delighted to have partnered with Theatre de Maagd and we look forward to a long relationship supporting training of new theatre makers, and specifically supporting development and experimentation with full integration between technical departments in making shows better."
The next step in this journey is the creation of a fully up-to-date digital twin of the venue by means of lidar scanning.
