Pre-Game entertainment has been a hallmark of every Los Angeles Lakers game, but the previous projection surface wasn’t delivering a fan experience that matched the team’s iconic status. TAIT was challenged by Benchmark Productions, who came up with the concept, to design and engineer an automated system that would meet the standards of the Lakers, the NBA, Crypto.com Arena, and broadcasters alike.

To address this need, a bespoke TAIT Automated Flying™ System was developed, manufactured and installed at the crypto.com arena. This system includes a rectangular truss and associated rigging, with vertical movement powered by synchronized chain hoists. When not in use, the truss rig is tucked away above the court. Before each game, it smoothly descends from the stadium’s center, temporarily covering the scoreboard. Projection surfaces roll down to create screens for pre-game visuals, made possible by TAIT roll-drops. This entire setup is controlled by the TAIT Navigator Automation system, which integrates seamlessly with the arena’s AV equipment. Since the Lakers only occupy the venue for part of the year, the system was designed for easy removal during the off-season, allowing flexibility for other events held at the arena.

“Working with TAIT on this project was the best decision we made. It was no easy task bringing this experience to life, but TAIT’s attention to detail and high level of execution allowed us to pull it off. Now our visuals have the screens they deserve, and the Lakers have the open they wanted!” reflected Chris Tardiff of Benchmark Productions.
