Arthur Miller’s stark and timely masterpiece, The Crucible, has been presented on stage as a warning to humanity in many forms; Scottish Ballet have created an award-winning production. TAIT have had a long-term partnership with Scottish Ballet, in providing automation of the modernist set, designed by David Finn and Emma Kingsbury that requires intricate and accurate motion of interlocking set pieces.

The challenge involved complex interaction of pieces in 3D space. We achieved this using a majority of off-the shelf reconfigurable inventory, including BT2 winches and the TAIT Fasttrack system, combined with harnessing the flexibility of TAIT Navigator’s “Space Device” features for coordinated movements of multiple pieces.
The use of our reconfigurable inventory enables productions to include automation in an efficient and sustainable method, by reusing machinery and control technology that can be configured to the needs of many different productions, thereby reducing both new manufacture and scrappage.

Scottish Ballet have partnered with TAIT on this production since its creation in 2018 and premiering the following year at the 2019 Edinburgh International Festival, then a subsequent UK tour later the same year, this was followed by a 2023 USA tour to Nashville, Washington DC and the Spoleto Festival in Charleston South Carolina, and we have been delighted to work with them again on the 2025 tour.
