Simon Stone’s intense reimagining of Ibsen’s “The Lady from The Sea” is brought to life at London’s unique Bridge Theatre with an in-the-round staging and set design by Lizzie Clachan that, like the play itself, reveals some unexpected twists.

Much of the turbulent drama of act two takes place in a live rainstorm and, at the climactic reunion of two central characters, the stage surface descends into a pool, standing the actors in water. As the final scenes play out, the pool floor descends further, to enable sufficient depth for actors to swim in. TAIT engineered the uniquely reconfigurable house facilities of the Bridge Theatre, and this was our first project providing production-specific automation equipment and expertise.

To provide the smooth, silent surprise of the stage motion we provided a pair of our high-capacity TAIT BT2-390 winches, along with a TAIT Navigator controls package - including an AU:tour drive rack and Compass controller. These winches were configured to cope with the unique dynamic forces presented by the motion of the stage floor through a body of water.

The result is an unexpected and moving contribution to the powerful metaphor presented by Simon Stone’s dramatic retelling, created by the integration of our reconfigurable inventory of motion products into a cleverly engineered scenic design.
