Our work with Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated helped bring Canadian culture to life– and to light– with mesmerizing splendor. To celebrate Canada’s 150th and Montreal’s 375th anniversaries, a unique project was envisioned for the Jacques Cartier Bridge: transforming it into a dynamic light display that reflects Montreal’s vibrant spirit. We collaborated with six other multimedia and lighting studios to transform the bridge into a dynamic public art installation called Living Connections. This installation lights up the Jacque Cartier Montreal bridge and embodies the city’s lively essence through real-time data integration.

TAIT played a pivotal role in integrating the complex data streams that controlled up to 500 lighting points on the bridge. Our task involved the technical execution of the proprietary data system, which allowed for the modulation of the bridge’s lighting based on a variety of live data sources, including traffic radars, bike sensors, environmental cues like sky color, and social media and news trends. Our team facilitated the seamless integration of this data, ensuring that each lighting point on the Jacques Cartier bridge could dynamically reflect real-time changes in the city. Colors, brightness, and patterns are also adjusted, making each light display unique to the moment it represents.

By linking the illumination of the Jacques Cartier Bridge to real-time environmental and social data, we’ve helped to create a living landmark that residents and visitors can connect with on a personal level. This project has set a precedent for how public infrastructure can interact with its environment and community. Now, the bridge stands as a testament to the city’s ingenuity and spirit, beautifully fusing technology with public art.
